FAQ

Straight answers about private lab testing

Honest answers to the questions people ask most. Throughout, the same principles hold: results are information, not a diagnosis; a prescriber decides and can decline; this is private, self-pay testing, not billed to MSP.

Is this covered by MSP?
No. Vytals is private, self-pay testing and is not billed to MSP. You pay out of pocket for the prescriber's authorization fee and the laboratory's fees. If your testing is medically necessary and belongs in the public system, we will point you there rather than have you pay privately.
Do I need a doctor's requisition?
Every requisition is authorized by a licensed BC prescriber. When you build a panel, you are making a request. An independent prescriber reviews that request and, where appropriate, authorizes the requisition. Building a panel is not an order, and nothing is sent to a lab automatically.
Can the prescriber decline a test?
Yes. An independent licensed BC prescriber exercises clinical judgment and can decline a test that is not appropriate for your situation, or suggest a more focused set. Authorization is a clinical decision and is not guaranteed for any given test. That is a feature of responsible care, not a hurdle.
Who draws my blood?
A contracted, licensed laboratory performs the draws and the analysis. Vytals does not operate a laboratory and does not perform testing itself. You take your authorized requisition to the lab, or book through the site, and pay the lab for the tests.
How do I get my results, and what if something is abnormal?
Results are returned to you securely. Abnormal or urgent findings are flagged and escalated through a defined follow-up workflow, so you are never left unsupported with a worrying number. A Carebridge pharmacist can walk you through what a result means and reasonable next steps within their scope.
Is a result a diagnosis?
No. Results are information, not a diagnosis. A single number is one snapshot and needs to be read in the context of your history, symptoms, and goals. A prescriber or your own clinician interprets results and decides what, if anything, they mean for you.
Where is my data stored?
Your personal and health information is stored and processed in Canada, and handled under BC PIPA and PIPEDA. It is encrypted in transit and at rest. We collect only what is needed to provide the service.
Can I use my own pharmacy afterward?
Yes. If any prescription follows from your results, you may fill it at any pharmacy you choose. Carebridge is available if you want it, but it is never a requirement. There is no fee-splitting or inducement between the parties involved.
What about sensitive tests, like genetic or oncology-related tests?
Some tests carry more weight than a routine blood panel. Genetic testing and tests related to cancer can have significant personal, family, and emotional implications. These receive extra care, with counselling where relevant, and a prescriber may require additional steps before authorizing. If a test is not a good fit to handle privately, we will say so.
Can I test everything?
We encourage thoughtful choices rather than testing everything. More tests do not equal better health, and a broad, unfocused panel often raises more confusion than clarity. A prescriber may decline tests that are not needed, or suggest a more focused set that better answers what you actually want to learn.
Do you offer at-home kits?
For some tests, at-home collection may be an option. Availability depends on the test and on what is permitted in British Columbia, so please confirm BC availability for the specific tests you are interested in. Many tests still require a draw at the contracted laboratory.
How much does it cost?
Pricing is transparent and self-pay. You see a clear breakdown: a prescriber authorization fee for the clinical review, the laboratory's fees for the tests you choose, and an optional pharmacist consult if you want one. Each is an independent service fee. See the Pricing page for the current breakdown.
How do I choose which tests fit me?
You choose the body and the tests that reflect who you are. Some tests and reference ranges depend on sex assigned at birth or on current hormones and organs, because that is what the underlying biology reflects. Where that matters, we explain it plainly and without assumptions. If you are unsure, the Is this right for me page can help, and a pharmacist can talk it through with you.
Is Vytals the prescriber or the lab?
No. Vytals coordinates the experience, but it is not the prescriber and not the lab. An independent licensed BC prescriber authorizes requisitions and exercises clinical judgment. A contracted laboratory performs the draws and analysis. Carebridge pharmacists provide results review and follow-up.
What if I have urgent symptoms right now?
If your symptoms are urgent or worrying, please seek care now rather than waiting for a test. For a medical emergency, call 911 or go to your nearest emergency department. For non-emergency health advice in BC, you can call 811 (HealthLink BC) at any time. Vytals is not a substitute for care from your family doctor or an emergency service.
